News Flash
The United Nations shipping agency, International Maritime Organization (IMO), had set the target of reducing carbon emissions from the shipping industry by 50% from 2008 levels by 2050.
The global shipping fleet, which accounts for 2.2% of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions, is under pressure to reduce those emissions and other pollution. About 90 percent of world trade is transported by sea. Reducing shipping emissions is ambitious and challenging as the shipping sector plays a major role in the growth of the economy.
The study says that in order to achieve the target set by the United Nations, it is essential to invest at least 50 to 70 billion USD annually.
Decarbonization
The notion of decarbonization relates to the reduction of carbon inputs to socioeconomic metabolism or of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions such as CO2 or CH4.
Environmental impact of shipping
- The environmental impact of shipping includes air pollution, water pollution, acoustic, and oil pollution.
- Ships are responsible for more than 18 percent of some air pollutants.
- It also includes greenhouse gas emissions.
- The International Maritime Organization estimates that carbon dioxide emissions from shipping were equal to 2.2% of the global human-made emissions in 2012 and expects them to rise 50 to 250 percent by 2050 if no action is taken.
International Maritime Organization
- The IMO regulates international shipping and its greenhouse gas emissions.
- The shipping industry was the only sector that was left out of the 1997 Kyoto protocol and its successor 2015 Paris agreement. However, in April 2018, it was the IMO (operated under UNESCO) that adopted the resolution. According to the resolution, the strategy to achieve the target begins in 2020.
