SANGITA KALANIDHI AWARD

 

Noted vocalist S. Sowmya has been chosen for the Sangita Kalanidhi award of the Music Academy.

  • The awards will be conferred during the Sadas of the Academy on January 1, 2020.
  • She is a student of Dr. S. Ramanathan and T. Mukta.
  • She was the youngest musician to receive the coveted award in recent times after Sanjay Subramaniam.

 

Sangita Kala Acharya awards will go to vocalists Seetha Narayanan and M.S. Sheela.

Nagaswaram player Vyasarpadi Kothandaraman and vocalist Rajkumar Bharathi will get the TTK (TT Krishnamachari) awards.

Aarti N. Rao will get the Musicologist Award.

The Nritya Kalanidhi award for Dance will be conferred on Priyadarshini Govind at the inauguration of the dance festival on January 3, 2020.

 

Sangita Kalanidhi award

  • Sangeetha Kalanidhi or Sangita Kalanidhi is the title awarded yearly to a Carnatic Musician by the Madras Music Academy.
  • Considered the highest accolade in the field of Carnatic music, it came into existence in 1942.

 

Sangita Kala Acharya

  • This award was instituted in 1993.
  • The award is given to those who have contributed by bringing several disciples to the concert platform.
  • Two senior musicians/preceptors are given this award each year.

 

TTK Award

  • In 1950, the Music Academy instituted the Certificate of Merit, given to senior musicians who had made a mark in the field as icons and gurus.
  • This in the 1980s was named the TTK Award in memory of TT Krishnamachari, who was a great patron of the arts.
  • Two senior performing artistes are selected annually for this award.
