What is VoWi-Fi? Uses and Advantages : Diligent IAS 02/12/2019 – Posted in: Daily News

VoLTE vs. VoWi-Fi

Airtel and Reliance Jio users can now make VoWi-Fi calls.

  • Previously, calls used to be conducted over the 2G network but after the concept of VoLTE came through, telecom service providers started providing 4G enabled voice calls – also called VoLTE calls.
  • VoWi-Fi will be able to make network-enabled voice calls over a Wi-Fi network as long as your phone supports it and your mobile service provider allows it.

Key Highlights

  • VoLTE is voice calls over a 4G LTE network. Although the marketing terminology states this as VoLTE – it is actually Voice Over LTE
  • The VoLTE is based on the IP Multimedia Subsystem network and comes with specific profiles for control and media planes of voice service on LTE defined by GSMA
  • Voice over WiFi or VoWiFi is the use of IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs (WLANs) to carry Voice over IP – also called VoIP traffic

VoLTE

  • VoLTE is voice calls over a 4G LTE network. It is a standard for high-speed wireless communication for smartphones and data terminals. This also includes IoT devices and wearables.
  • The VoLTE is based on the IP Multimedia Subsystem network and comes with specific profiles for control and media planes of voice service on LTE defined by GSMA.
  • VoLTE can connect calls up to twice as fast as the current methods and as 2G and 3G connections.
  • Benefits: Superior call quality, improved coverage and connectivity, improved battery life, video calling on tap, and faster connection.

Vo-WiFi

  • VoWi-Fi simply stands for voice over Wi-Fi.
  • VoWi-Fi is a complementary technology to VoLTE and utilises IMS technology to provide a packet voice service that is delivered over IP via a Wi-Fi network.
  • The feature can be used over private WLANs, home WiFi networks, and public WiFi hotspots.
  • A VoWiFi will carry your call over wireless networks which means one can make normals calls in the absence of cellular networks.
  • The technology should ideally permit, depending on implementation, that VoLTE calls may be seamlessly handled between LTE and Wi-Fi, depending on the availability of a better option.
  • The security is still handled by the SIM-based authentication, which means you aren’t relying on any app’s security or getting exposure to potential vulnerabilities.
  • So basically any application that lets you make voice calls using your internet or WiFi, is using VoWiFi technology. The difference here is that – in order to make calls via WiFi, you had to first go into the app. However, this time you can just open the native dialer app and start calling – like you would when the cellular network is available.

Way forward

VoWiFi is the big trump card for mobile operators heading into the year 2020, since Google Android and Apple iOS, two of the biggest smartphone platforms, natively support VoWiFi.

Important Information
  • Jio was the first one to bring 4G VoLTE services back in September 2016.
  • VoWiFi is – WhatsApp calls are a great example of VoWiFI. Another app – Facebook Messenger is capable of VoWiFI.
