News Flash

According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), July 2019 possibly broke the record for the hottest month since analysis began.

  • The new finding emerged from analysis of new data from the WMO and the Copernicus Climate Change Programme( CCCP).
  • CCCP is run by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts.

Findings

  • The previous warmest month on record was July 2016.
  • According to the Copernicus Programme, June 2019 was the warmest June ever recorded.
  • July 2019 was close to 1.2°C above the pre-industrial level.

Paris Agreement

The Paris Agreement set specific ‘temperature targets’ with a goal to keep the increase in global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels; and to aim to limit the increase to 1.5°C.

Why it’s a concern

  • Exceptional heat has been observed across the globe, with several European Countries recording high temperature.
  • The extraordinary heat was accompanied by dramatic ice melt in Greenland, in the Arctic and on European glaciers.
  • Unprecedented wildfires raged in the Arctic, devastating once pristine forests which used to absorb carbon dioxide and instead of turning them into fiery sources of greenhouse gases.

Way ahead

  • UN Secretary-General urged countries to take action on climate change now, indeed, the iceberg is also rapidly melting.
  • Rising temperature will worsen in the future without urgent climate action.

World Meteorological Organization

  • It is an intergovernmental organization with a membership of 193 Member States and Territories.
  • World Meteorological Organization originated from the International Meteorological Organization (IMO), the roots of which were planted at the 1873 Vienna International Meteorological Congress.
  • Established by the ratification of the WMO Convention on 23 March 1950, WMO became the specialised agency of the United Nations for meteorology (weather and climate), operational hydrology and related geophysical sciences a year later.
  • The Secretariat, headquartered in Geneva, is headed by the Secretary-General. Its supreme body is the World Meteorological Congress.
  • WMO is dedicated to international cooperation and coordination on the state and behaviour of the Earth’s atmosphere, its interaction with the land and oceans, the weather and climate it produces, and the resulting distribution of water resources.
