The Yamuna floodplain water conservation project has received all necessary approvals from NGT.
Aim
The project aims at conserving rainwater in the Yamuna floodplains and creating a mega reservoir between Palla and Wazirabad in Delhi to help deal with the water shortage in Delhi.
Reservoir
A reservoir is, most commonly, an enlarged natural or artificial lake, pond or impoundment created using a dam or lock to store water.
Features & Significance
- The project involves the creation of small ponds in the floodplains.
- It will store water from the overflowing Yamuna during the monsoon season.
- Recycling and recharging of groundwater were the solutions to the problem of water scarcity.
- Delhi government will pay Rs 77,000 annually to farmers who rent out their lands on the Yamuna floodplains conservation project.
- The project is the first of its kind project in the country.
- IIT-Delhi already indicates that this project will be a big success.
- After the water conservation effort augments the water table bore wells would be used to draw out water and solve the capital’s water shortage.
