Elevated Bus Rapid Transit System

  • EBRTS envisages running of electric articulated twin/three buses to be exclusively run on the viaduct to be built on piers akin to the metro rail project but at a much less height.
  • The elevated bus corridor would be connecting HiTex, HICC, Hi-Tec City, MindSpace junction, Gachibowli and Narsingi with elevated stations at half a kilometer each.

Bus rapid transit (BRT)

  • BRT also called a busway or transitway, is a bus-based public transport system.
  • It is designed to improve capacity and reliability relative to a conventional bus system.
  • Typically, a BRT system includes roadways that are dedicated to buses.

Features & Significances

  • Priorities are given to BRT at intersections.
  • Reduce delays caused by passengers boarding or leaving buses or purchasing fares.
  • Bus-only lanes make for faster travel and ensure that buses are not delayed by mixed traffic congestion.
  • Combination of the capacity and speed of a metro with the flexibility, low cost, and simplicity of a bus system.
  • Station platforms should be level with the bus floor for quick and easy boarding.
  • Multiple doors for fast entry and exit.
  • Double-decker buses or guided buses may also be used.
  • A straightforward way to reduce air quality and Noise related problems.

Delhi BRT

  • The Delhi BRTS was a bus rapid transit system in Delhi.
  • The first route opened in 2008.
  • The project was well used but has been criticized for the difficulty of access to the bus platforms, which are in the middle of the road.
  • The AAP Government had announced the scrapping of the bus rapid transit system and it was dismantled in 2016.
