News Flash

The Global Tuberculosis Report 2019 released by the World Health Organization (WHO).

• According to the report, the world is not on track to reach the 2020 milestone of the End TB strategy.
• The report cites that nearly 10 million people fall ill with tuberculosis (TB) each year.
• Globally, about 1.7 billion people are infected with M. tuberculosis, which means they are at risk of developing the disease.

 

Highlights

• India accounts for about 27 percent of the global total, followed by China (9%) and Indonesia (8%).
• The report identifies that Tuberculosis is one of the top 10 causes of death, ranking above HIV/ AIDS.
• About 90 percent of people who develop TB are adults.

 

Concept of High Burden Country

• From 1998 to 2015, the concept of a high burden country, or HBC, became widely used in the context of TB.
• In 2015, three HBC lists came into prevalence – one is for TB, the second is for HIV-associated TB and the third is for MDR-TB.
• 14 countries are in all three lists include Angola, China, Congo, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, South Africa, Thailand and Zimbabwe.

 

END TB strategy by the WHO

• The END TB strategy by the WHO aimed to reduce TB by 20 percent from 2015-18.
• Between 2015 and 2018, only 6.3 percent of TB cases showed a cumulative decline.
• The global decline in the total number of TB deaths between 2015 and 2018 was 11 percent.
