The Ganga-Volga Dialogue between India and Russia was held in New Delhi. It was conceptualized during the October 2018 India-Russia Summit.

The dominant theme of the discussions was Connectivity.

The aim of the dialogue is very similar to the International North-South Transport Corridor.

 

Ganga-Volga Dialogue Highlights

 

  • The Dialogue to contribute to greater people-to-people exchanges between two nations.
  • The concept of Connectivity includes greater academic and economic exchanges, as well as Digital Connectivity.
  • India-Russia exchanges ideas on how to expand the areas of education, culture, economy, entrepreneurship, strategic thought, innovation, media, tourism, healthcare, manufacturing and technology.
  • The role of the two major river systems of the Ganga and Volga in providing the framework for a host of activities including in culture and civilization, development of economic activity using riverine systems, and connecting people from the two river basins.
  • During the dialogue, India placed its state of not being into any military alliance in the Quad grouping. This is important for India to keep its trade and defence relations between Russia and the USA balanced.

 

Way ahead

 

The recommendation of the Dialogue for the leaders of India and Russia was to institutionalize the process, so that the Ganga Volga Dialogue could become a Track 1.5 platform for enhancing the special and privileged strategic partnership between India and Russia.
