ISRO chief K. Sivan has confirmed its next space mission with Chandrayaan-3 by 2021.

  • The Chandrayaan-3’s configuration will be similar to that of its predecessor, the Chandrayaan-2.
  • The Chandrayaan-3 will also have a lander and a rover with a propulsion module.
  • ISRO is planning for the landing location of the Chandrayaan-3 at the same location as the Chandrayaan-2.

 

Aim

Chandrayaan-3 will aim to achieve the original mission objectives that were set for Chandrayaan-2. This entails studying the lunar south pole, where the water reservoirs are expected to hold multiple answers for mankind.

 

Advantages & Significances

The lunar water deposits may help us to understand the origin of life on Earth, and it will also help us to find the first confirmed sign of life outside Earth.

 

Gaganyaan Mission

  • K.Sivan also said that preparations for the Gaganyaan mission are going on simultaneously with the Chandrayaan-3 mission.
  • Gaganyaan is an Indian crewed orbital spacecraft that is intended to send 3 astronauts to space for a minimum of seven days by 2022, as part of the Indian Human Spaceflight Programme.
  • The spacecraft, which is being developed by the Isro, consists of a service module and a crew module, collectively known as the Orbital Module.

 

Focus areas for ISRO

  • ISRO chairman recalled the achievements of ISRO in 2019 and outlined the focus areas for the space agency.
  • In 2019, our strategy mainly was the expansion program. We wanted to expand ISRO horizontally.
  • The second strategy adopted in 2019 was the capacity building on an outreach program. The third one is the reduction of the physical work in ISRO.
  • Sivan also announced that the land acquisition for a second spaceport has been initiated. The new port will be in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu.
