The PM Modi proposed an “Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative” for safe, secure and stable maritime domain. The announcement was made by PM at the East Asia Summit 2019.
The Focus areas include creating partnerships among interested states in Enhancing maritime security; Sustainably using marine resources; Disaster prevention & management.
East Asia Summit
- It is a leader-led platform, where discussions are held on various developments in the region. The agenda of the 2019 summit was to review the future direction of East Asia Summit co-operation and exchange views on regional and international issues.
- EAS is the Indo-Pacific’s premier forum for strategic dialogue.
- East Asia Summit is the only leader-led forum at which all key partners meet to discuss the full range of political, security and economic challenges facing the Indo-Pacific, and has an important role to play in advancing closer regional cooperation.
- The EAS has 18 members – the ten ASEAN countries (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam) along with Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, the United States and Russia.
- This represents 54 percent of the world’s population and accounts for around 58 percent of global GDP worth an estimated US$49.4 trillion.
