News Flash

The Government of Assam signed an agreement with French public financial institution AFD (French Development Agency) for assistance for five years towards the development of the state’s forests and ecosystems, and preserve their biodiversity.

 

Aim

Assam Project for Forest and Biodiversity Conservation aims to:

  • Reforest an additional 12,000 hectares of land
  • Scale-up efforts in biodiversity conservation
  • Skill the members of 135 additional communities in different trades

 

Highlights

  • This project works particularly closely with the women of local communities, empowering them through participatory planning and training them in new skills. This will help them to revive the local economy, protect forest resources and increase their financial independence.
  • The project also reinforces its climate focus. Biodiversity conservation will remain a priority for both nations.

 

Background

Earlier, APFBC was implemented (2012-19) with support from AFD in response to the threats posed by deforestation, poaching, and overdependence of local communities on forest resources across the state.

 

Way ahead

This project would be to focus on forest development, re-forestation, and the development of the Forest Management Information System (FMIS) and using modern technology for sustainable forest management and reduction of man-animal conflict.
