Project REPLAN (Reducing Plastic from Nature) – Diligent IAS 13/09/2019 – Posted in: Daily News

PROJECT REPLAN

The Khadi and Village Industries Commission’s (KVIC) project REPLAN (Reducing Plastic from Nature) has completed one year successfully.

  • Last year, Khadi India has started manufacturing a designer carry bag made from a mix of plastic waste and paper pulp at Kumarappa National Handmade Paper Institute (KNHPI), a KVIC unit in Jaipur.
  • The bags were the first-ofa-kind product made with 20% recycled single-use plastic waste, which was welded in with cotton rags to create a reusable carry bag.
  • The waste plastic from nature is collected, de-structured and de-gradated and then mixed with paper pulp in a ratio of 80 is to 20.

Aim

The Project REPLAN aims to remove the existing waste plastic material from nature and use it in a semi-permanent manner so that the availability of plastic in nature is reduced to a large extent.

Significance

  • It will utilise various types of plastic waste including high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE). Hence, reducing plastic pollution.
  • Reduce the manufacturing cost by 34%. Hence, a cheaper carry bag.

Background

The project REPLAN was launched in August 2018 in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan’ (Clean India Mission).
