LIMBOO AND TAMANG COMMUNITIES

 

A proposal for reservation of seats for Limboo and Tamang communities in Sikkim Legislative Assembly is under consideration.

Article 371F(f) and Article 332 of the Constitution of India govern reservation of seats in the Legislative Assembly of Sikkim.

 

Background

  • Part XVI of the Indian Constitution deals with the reservation for scheduled castes (SC) and scheduled tribes (ST) in federal and state legislatures, as well as with the constitutional authority of the president to establish commissions to examine and recommend remedies for the welfare of SC and ST groups.
  • This reservations in politics have been extended to employment (Article 16) and to higher education.
  • The primary objective of the reservation system in India is to enhance the social and educational status of underprivileged communities and people thus improve their lives.
