Centre has launched the country’s largest sanitation survey Swaccha Survakshan Grameen-2019. It is a survey that reviews the progress of its cleanliness drive in rural areas.

The deadline for the survey is October 2—the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and the deadline to make the country open defecation free (ODF).
The survey will take place in 18 thousand villages of 698 districts.
This will be the second survey that the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, which now comes under the Jal Shakti ministry.

Aim

The aim of Swaccha Survakshan Grameen 2019 survey is to engage rural communities in improvement of the sanitation status of their districts and states through the intensive campaign.

Basis for Rankings

States and districts will be ranked on the basis of data gleaned from several sources:

Self-reporting by districts
Data from SBM-G IMIS
District-level surveys of public places like schools, anganwadis, PHCs, Haat bazaars
Panchayat and citizen’s perception of Swachhata and their recommendations for improvement of the programme.

The weights to different elements of the SSG would be as below:

Direct Observation of sanitation in public places (30%)
Citizen’s Feedback including feedback from common citizens, key influencers at the village level and from citizens online using the App (35%)
Service Level Progress on sanitation-related parameters (35%)
