The second edition of the South Asia Safety Summit was recently concluded in New Delhi. In a bid to halt abuse of women and children online, the Indian government partnered with Facebook India.

 

At the South Asia Safety Summit 2019, the Ministry of Women and Child Development and Facebook jointly launched a comic series and a global literacy programme. The global programme aims to train 5 million people over the next two years.

 

 

Summit Highlights

 

  • The summit saw participants from 125 civil society organizations from India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Afghanistan who have expertise in running digital literacy programmes and creating tools for the social-emotional development of young people.
  • Comic series under #CreateCareConnect: It was launched during the summit with an aim to educate young users about online safety in a simple and engaging way. It is illustrated by a young Delhi-based doodler, @neha.doodles which aims to educate young users about online safety in a simple and engaging way.
  • During the Summit, the Union Minister of WCD launched the “We Think Digital” website. This website is an online education portal with interactive tutorials aimed at helping people think critically and share thoughtfully online. The topics covered include privacy, safety, security, digital discourse and knowing your digital footprint.
  • The social media company also announced the formation of the Ideal Internet Consortium led by the Mumbai based non-profit organisation Aarambh India Initiative which will work towards ensuring safety for children who are coming online.
  • Come 2020, the online networking platform is planning to roll out video series — ‘Thumbstoppers’ — that will feature advertising communities to spread awareness on gender equaliy, domestic violence and girl child education.

 

Conclusion

While the internet opens doors for women and children to learn and gain knowledge, it also comes with the responsibility to ensure their safety, and to enable them to express their views without any apprehension.
