The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan said more civilians were killed by NATO and Afghan forces than by the Taliban and other militant groups during the first half of 2019.

  • UN said, there were 717 civilians killed by Afghan and US forces, compared to 531 by militants.
  • The US military has rejected Unama’s findings.
  • Ground engagements remained the leading cause of civilian casualties, followed by improvised explosive bombings and aerial operations.

  • 1,366 civilians were killed during the first six months of 2019, marking a 30% drop from last year.
  • Pro-government forces, including the US and its international allies, killed 717 civilians.
  • The Taliban, “Islamic State” and other militant groups killed 531 civilians.
  • In total, 2,446 civilians were injured.

 

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA)

  • UNAMA is a political UN mission established at the request of the Government of Afghanistan to assist it and the people of Afghanistan in laying the foundations for sustainable peace and development.
  • UNAMA was established on 28 March 2002 by United Nations Security Council Resolution.
  • Its original mandate was to support the Bonn Agreement (December 2001).

 

Mandata

  • Reviewed annually, this mandate has been altered over time to reflect the needs of the country and was extended for another six months on 15 March 2019 by Resolution.
  • UNAMA maintains a permanent and extensive field presence across Afghanistan, as well as liaison offices in Pakistan and Iran.
