Indian government ‘unaccepted’ the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) reference to Jammu and Kashmir in a communiqué adopted at its summit meeting in the Saudi Arabian city of Makkah few days ago.

The 14th summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) was held in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The agenda of meeting was to address ‘current issues in Muslim world’ and ‘recent developments in a number of OIC member states.

  • Pakistan is suspected to have played a major part in finalising the communiqué – one of the possible key reasons Kashmir having figured so prominently in the OIC communiqué.

 

What the OIC said in its 14th summit

In communique at the Makkah summit, the OIC reiterated its support for the legitimate rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and also appointed a special envoy for the state.

The Conference “condemned the recent outbreaks of violence in the region and invited India to implement the relevant Security Council resolutions to settle its protracted conflict with its neighbour”.

It also called for “the expedited establishment of a UN commission of inquiry to investigate into the grave human rights violations in Kashmir, and called on India to allow this proposed commission and international human rights organizations to access Indian-occupied Kashmir”.

The Conference approved the appointment of Saudi Arabia’s Yousef Aldobeay as its Special Envoy for Jammu and Kashmir.

 

India’s reaction

  • In a strong reaction, India slammed the OIC saying it should refrain from making such “unwarranted references.”
  • The OIC has no locus standi in matters relating to the state of Jammu and Kashmir, which is an integral part of India.
  • It is reiterated that OIC should refrain from making such unwarranted references.

  • The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is the second largest inter-governmental organization after the United Nations with a membership of 57 states spread over four continents.
  • The OIC is an international organisation consisting of 57 member states, 53 of them Muslim-majority nations.
  • It endeavors to safeguard and protect the interests of the Muslim world in the spirit of promoting international peace and harmony among various people of the world.
  • The Organization was established upon a decision of the historical summit which took place in Rabat, Kingdom of Morocco on 12th Rajab 1389 Hijra (25 September 1969) following the criminal arson of Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied Jerusalem.
  • Its permanent secretariat is in Jeddah, which is headed by the organization’s secretary general.
