QUIT INDIA MOVEMENT

The 77th anniversary of the August Kranti Din, the historic day of freedom struggle of our country, is being observed on August 8.

  • On this date in 1942, Mahatma Gandhi gave a clarion call to end the British rule.
  • On the very same day, Mahatma Gandhi had launched the Quit India Movement at the session of the All-India Congress Committee in Mumbai.
  • After the failure of Cripps Mission, Gandhiji gave the call to Do or Die in his Quit India speech delivered at the Gowalia Tank Maidan in Mumbai.
  • Gowalia Tank Maidan in Mumbai today popularly known as August Kranti Maidan.
  • The Bharat Chhodo Andolan or the August Kranti of 1942 was a swan-song of British rule in India in the history of the Independence struggle.

 

Important Info

  • At that time, Aruna Asaf Ali hoisted the Indian Tricolour in the Gowalia Tank Maidan proudly. This was the first time when Indian Triclour was hoisted.
  • In 1992 Reserve Bank of India issued a 1 rupee commemorative coin to mark the Golden Jubilee of the Quit India Movement.
