Pneumonia is a preventable and treatable disease that sickens 155 million children under 5 year of age. It can be serious and life-threatening. Pneumonia is an infection that inflames the air sacs in one or both lungs. The air sacs may fill with fluid or pus (purulent material), causing cough with phlegm or pus, fever, chills, and difficulty breathing. A variety of organisms, including bacteria, viruses and fungi, can cause pneumonia.

The common cause of pneumonia is bacteria known as Streptococcus pneumoniae.  Virus also causes pneumonia like influenza (flu), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), rhinoviruses (common cold). Pneumonia can also be caused due to fungus.
